On Tuesday November 10th, 2015 HCT President Joan Deem and HCT 1st Vice President Thomas Glenn attended the Fight for 15 and A Union for Everyone rally in New York City's Foley Square against the appropriate backdrop of the Federal Courthouses. The rally centered on the importance of raising the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour nationwide. Many labor unions attended the packed late afternoon rally to listen to rousing speeches by Governor Cuomo, and heads of the Service Employees International Union (Home healthcare workers), AFSCME, UPS, the Teamsters, and various labor workers. The importance of raising the minimum wage is a human rights issue. Many hard-working Americans must be forced to decide between paying rent and putting food on the table for their families. The deleterious effects of poverty upon school children trickle down to educators who must elevate these children daily. This underlying sentiment was not lost on those in attendance.
