Staff and Students Raise Money for Cystic Fibrosis

by Kevin Kerley

This October, Hicksville Middle School health teacher Anthony Tussie took the opportunity to initiate a program to contribute to the Boomer Esiason Foundation. The BEF raises money and awareness for cystic fibrosis. On Monday, October 19 and Tuesday, October 20 students and staff members from the Middle School walked the track during health classes in honor of those with cystic fibrosis.  Donations were raised by selling T-shirts to staff members throughout the district, sports drinks and snacks after school and rubber bracelets.  This year nearly $1400 was raised. Mr. Tussie wanted to expand the opportunity to teach staff and students the importance of advocating for those with cystic fibrosis in addition to traditional cancer awareness campaigns. During the campaign, members of the district-wide physical education staff focused on the importance of cardiovascular endurance. Students and staff participated in aerobic workouts on these days to help reinforce the importance of lung health and to stress how fortunate we are to be able to exercise.
