An Apple From Your Teacher at the Wellness Fair

The Hicksville Congress of Teachers was a major supporter of the District's sixth annual Wellness Fair on Saturday, March 5, 2016. As always, the community turnout was tremendous, and the event was an overwhelming success. The HCT had its own tables with the theme "An Apple From Your Teacher." In order to promote healthy snack choices, over 30 teachers from across the District volunteered to distribute Granny Smith, Red and Golden Delicious, and Fuji apples to everyone who stopped by. Over six bushels of apples were distributed, and all of the students loved seeing their teachers outside of the classroom! In addition, over 600 quality children's books were also distributed by the HCT to the children of the Hicksville community to help encourage the love of reading and to support literacy.

A special thank you to the HCT LAP team for purchasing the books for the children of Hicksville. The Local Action Project (LAP) is a three-year NYSUT program designed to help local teachers' unions become more effective organizations. Four program goals are: increasing member participation, expanding community outreach, strengthening political action and improving communications. NYSUT provides financial support to help unions reach these goals. In its first two years of this program, the Hicksville Congress of Teachers has implemented many new initiatives such as improved electronic communications and website, a Membership Engagement Committee, and other student-centered programs.
