“For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it… if only we’re brave enough to BE it.” These words by 22-year-old poet Amanda Gorman helped inspire a bulletin board in the Middle School celebrating Black History Month. Seventh grade Special Education teacher Patricia Wilson-Lord created the board with input from fellow HMS teachers Michelle Cooper, Kristen Powell and Corrine Masterson as well as students in her advisory class. The board depicts images of prominent Black Americans from the past and today along with quotes from Gorman’s poem, “The Hill We Climb,” which she read during the inauguration of President Biden.

Wilson-Lord says her goal in creating this board is to promote acceptance of others and spread joy and unity to HMS students and staff. She adds, “I am so grateful to be a part of this wonderful community. Hicksville is a great place with great students. They inspire me to be a better teacher everyday.”
