Retirees’ Update – April 2015

Edwin Caner (1994) We are sad to report that long-time Hicksville High School English teacher passed away this April.

Adele Damian (1996) – I recently returned from a 9-day trip to Cuba. I've done a lot of traveling, since retiring, but this trip was by far, the most enjoyable, I learned so much history, met wonderful and talented people, visited schools, artists, danced the salsa, heard live music everywhere, etc. The U.S.A. does not have a business relationship with Cuba, because of the embargo, so there were many restrictions, such as acting like a tourist on the beaches! I had to take a chartered plane from Miami to Havana with a specially licensed travel agency. There were no credit cards accepted.....only cash, almost non-existent internet, no cell phones, etc. It was actually a freeing feeling to go back in time to when our lives were not controlled by electronics.
I hope the travel restrictions are loosened soon so you can travel freely there.. I think you would agree with me that the Cuban people of today are resilient, warm, and happy to meet Americans.
